Course Description

Globally, the United States is still a very young nation, growing and developing at a rapid pace, making its evolution from colony to superpower both remarkable and transformative. This course will examine our nation’s transformation into a world power, beginning with the Great Depression through and including modern times. By the end of this course, students will understand the importance of the United States’ interconnected role and responsibility to the international community. The topics and events learned during this course are among the most important and crucial in the formation of the modern United States, and the hope is that by gaining a greater understanding of their country’s history, students will gain a stronger understanding of their roles as citizens of the United States and build upon and develop a strong civic identity. Ultimately, the hope is that by studying these topics, students will gain a stronger sense of civic identity and be ready to become active citizens.

Employ a wide variety of source materials (primary and secondary) and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners in the course. The objectives of this course are to provide students with an understanding of their country's history and the events that made it what it is today. Students will not only gain an invaluable understanding of the most recent events in our country's past, but will develop a broad set of skills, abilities, and techniques that serve as valuable assets. Since this course deals with more contemporary events and issues, students will be able to see the connections and influence of these events more directly and vividly, as many of these events continue to have a resounding impact on our daily lives. By examining primary and secondary sources through the use of research-based learning practices, students will formulate their own unique and independent viewpoints on our country's history and its development into the nation it is today. This learning approach will enable students to improve and enhance their critical thinking skills, literacy skills, and civic understanding.

• 60% Major Evaluations (tests, research papers, quarterly exams, essays minor evaluations (tests, essays, exercises, writing portfolio, weekly presentations to Google Discussion Groups) Essays and Projects
• 35% Classwork / Participation (doing is now, note taking, class preparation, following directions, cooperation, and attendance / punctuality)
• 5% Homework (reading, vocabulary, grammar and writing assignments)
